Respond to 10 Minutes

In the short film 10 minutes, it is narrating two people’s different life for tiny 10 minutes in paralleled space. The first man is an Asian tourist who is traveling in Rome. In his 10 minute, he wants to have photo developed. And the only thing he needs to do is waiting outside the shop. He lights up a cigarette with leisurable mood. The street is busy, but he doesn’t talk to any one. At the same time, anther character, the little boy Memo is required to get water and bread by his mom. He lived at a ghetto which in a war zone. He needs to run through war zone for finishing the “assignment.” The dangerous process set off his brave. He is chatting to anybody who he meets. “Coldness in peace world and warmness in war zone,” the comparison is very strong. The 10 minutes of the Asian tourist is colorful and leisurable, but the 10minutes of Memo is dark and full of panic. The director shows the contrast of two different 10 minutes to emphasize the significance of peace. If you are living in a war zone, you may lose everything in next minutes. Therefore, I think he is calling us for cherishing the peace, and the family.

Respond to The Gift

The short film, The Gift, describes an ancient box was delivered to a master who lived in a luxury house. As Dr. J said, “the box looks old, but it works new.” The key to open it is human hair, which is very high-tech. What is in the box? The master answered “unicorn.” This word is a symbol of unreal and mythical. And it also is a metaphor of rarity. Then the deliveryman escaped from the house suddenly after killed the master. I think this plot shows the desire of human being. Unfortunately, he met car accident around the house. Then the robot servant got the box, and he run. Those plots covers a mysterious veil above the box.  I think it is an evil box that it brings death to people. And the robot realized this box is dangerous, so he throw it into river. In our class discussion, other classmates said, “the ending is a new beginning.” And I agree with this point. The short film has an open type ending so that audience will image the fate of the little boy. After I have watched this film, I think the title The Gift is ironic. There is no gift will bring death and misfortune to people. And the box is magical, so I am attracted. Moreover, the film is short but meaningful so that we have enough space to think about it.  And I think this film is worth to watch over and over again for digesting.

Response to the Discussion Question

Discussion Question: The author spent lots of space discussing the history of ancestors, their immigration. Why did the author do that? What is the function of telling the history in detail? (From: Tina, Jocy and Zoe)
The author spent lost of space discussing the history of ancestors, their immigration, because the author should introduce their tribe’s background in order to hide the foreshadowing for creating new world in following. The history is told in detail with flowery language; so that we can gain the information that this tribe has gone through hard suffering for escaping from war, and they are safe now.
The words “the beginning” shows up over and over again. I think it has double meanings. The meaning of first layer is “the beginning” shows us how the author’s ancestor immigrated at the beginning. And they owned “the beginning” over and over again when they immigrated every time. The meaning of second layer is “the beginning” emphasizes the villagers want to have a new beginning, which prepares for the following action: create a new world. The day of immigrating and escaping had been gone for a long time so they are ready to restart new life.

What Makes it a “Good” Fiction?

No One Is Here Except All of Us is a story about a tribe migrates for escaping from war. They have migrated from one place to another for many years. They go across the face of the earth (ocean, mountains, and deserts), and they have never stop moving for hundreds years. They want to hide at some place for keeping safe. I think it’s a good fiction, because it makes my heart soars.
No One Is Here Except All of Us” is a good fiction name, which raises readers’ curiousness and attracts their attention. The first part of the story is narrating the premise by decorative and “flowery” language. The narrator describes the charming face of the earth, which implying their tribe goes though oceans, mountains, and deserts. “We remember the story, they thought, but let the story not remember us.” This sentence makes me ponder deeply over the word “forgotten.” Their grandparents want them to forget the horrible history about the war, and just hide in the island until they are safe.

The next part of the story is almost dialogue and the mental activity of the narrator. One day, a stranger appearance at the beach. The narrator meets the stranger, and begins to wonder the world. “The beginning of the perfect world,” the narrator says. As the narrator’s advice, the people who live in the island realize there is no one exists but them and God. Thus, they decide to rebuild the world. “And we hoped that it would be good.” The ending seems like a very hopeful beginning. They are creating a new world with their best wishes that gives readers a space to image how good the world will be.
