My Ending of Killing Alec:

My Ending of Killing Alec:

He climbed out of the hole, glistening in mud. He really was beautiful. We admired him. We exhaled smoke again, slowly this time. Thoughtful.
“ It’s true that we can’t live without Alec,” I thought.
Looked at Alec who was glistening in mud, we did not want to kill him anymore. Our pretty, funny and beautiful Alec, we adored him so much so that we could not imagine the life without him. Coincidentally, we rushed to him and hugged him. All of us were stained with mud from our Alec. Of course, we forgave him and decided to give up the merciless plan.
We shared Alec happily ever after.

The Reasons:

There are two reasons for explaining why I choose the “shared“ type ending.
Firstthere are too many details show that “we” love Alec very much. “We” would be jealous of each other because “we” love him. So I believe that they don’t want to Alec really be killed in their heart.

Second, the term “our Alec” is appeared twice time and they use “we” as a subject, which reveals that we would like to forgive and share Alec.

Combine Images in Meaningful Way

The original picture is describing a really beautifulcharming girl leans against the underbrush in the countryside. It shows the nature, youthful girl is enjoying her life happily. Audience can gain aesthetic feeling from it. I want to subvert her beautiful face and break the aesthetic feeling so I add Simpson’s image. The Simpson's image makes the picture becomes funny and humorous.

Response To The Class On November 24

Today, we have discussed the different between copy and imitation (copy vs. imitation.) Zoe proposes the idea about idea and expression that we can convey a same idea in different expressions. Then Tess says imitation would give the thing a new meaning. I agree with their ideas totally. In my opinion, copying is died thing without soul, but imitation is newborn.
Dr. J shows us three samples that are subverted by editors. The first one is a famous painting of a prideful and nobiliary madam. She’s original expression is bored, disdainful and superior. Editor changes her face to Mr. Bean’s humorous face. The second one is a portrait painting of George Watsontown, which is looking like detained, thoughtful, tired, distant, important and presidential. After the face is changed to Mr. Bean’s, the original meaning is subverted again. The new image shows challenge authority, energetic and intimacy. The last sample is Starbucks’ logo, which is showing uniformity (success and lack of authenticity) and a mermaid (root in Moby Dick by Herman Melville, which is peaceful, educated and enterprising.) Then, Dr. J draws two guns in mermaid’s hands. The peaceful mermaid becomes a violent and arrogant cowboy with maniacal smile who disregards rules.

It is interesting to give visual art a new meaning. And I have gained the knowledge about the different between copy and imitation.

What’s Love?

Love is defined by “a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes that ranges from interpersonal affection to pleasure.” It is divided into four parts: “kinship or familiarity, friendship, sexual or romantic desire, and self-emptying or divine love. “
Love is a kind of emotion about care, loyalty, and goodwill. Of course we can love many people at same time, such as family, friends, lovers, etc. However, I think human beings should obey monogamy in romantic love. Love in the story Killing Alec, belongs to romantic love, but it is described ridiculously. The narrator reveals that Alec loves all of five girls. Besides, in the appellation “our Alec,” I realize that girls seem like loving exclusively but they also would like to share Alec’s love. They permit polygamy in their subconsciousness, which is ridiculous in a civilized society.

Love can be shared in familiarity or friendship, but not for romantic desire. In my perspective, romantic love should be monogamy. Monogamy is better for people’s relationships in marriage, and it is improving females’ status as well.

Response to Killing Alec

Dr. J’s Killing Alec is described a strange but interesting story that Caroline, Anje, Tiffany, and me decided to kill their same boyfriend Alec. At first, they decide to manhunt him. They find him easily at a village in California. But he is dating with Marlena. They tell Marlena all the process. Then, Marlena joins in their team. This time, they want to the swamp. And Alec digs a grave for himself with happy mood. Then Alec says he loves them all. And girls say they love Alec as well.
Dr. J sets the ridiculous premise of the story at the beginning, which makes the story clear. In the process of my editing, I realize that the minds of these characters are ridiculous as well. In the story, Alec agrees with girls’ plan which aims to kill him. And more than one detail reveals that girls love Alec very much, but they still decide to kill him. The story is full of contradictions. These contradictions establish suspense to appeal readers. Therefore, I am attracted to keep reading it. Another function of these contradictions is adding the interesting elements into this story.

Moreover, Dr. J describes many details to show girls care about Alec very much. However, it is a flaw that Dr.J don’t give us clues to figure out why they love Alec so much but wants to kill him. I guess maybe Dr. J does this on purpose for appealing our interests. And the sentence in last paragraph “he climbed out of the hole, glistening in mud,” I still can not understand it.

Response to The City of Tanfy

The story The City of Tanfy is telling that the narrator enters the poor and strange city Tanfy as an outsider. There has a special custom in the city Tanfy that people eat cold food. Contradictorily, the narrator realizes that there have many lavish women in the poor city. Then the narrator joins in a dancing party. In this party, he meets a butcher who gave hot meat to him. He eats the hot meat without considering. And at the end, he appears on the stage of the party and suggests people that they shouldn’t eat cold food but enjoy their life and get happiness.
I agree with the point that Alice proposed in our class. She said this story is similar to the Japanese film Spirited Away. The custom of eating cold food symbolizes cannibalism. Maybe the sense of Spirited Away is what the author really wants to convey, but we don’t realize this implied meaning as readers. This should give us more clues to show the implied meaning. The ending part of the story is worse than the earlier part.

Moreover, I appreciate the author’s method of describing. I enjoy reading the earlier part of this story because I think the wording is cautious, proper, and beautiful. The author gives us suspense clues to make us interest in the story. And he/she is good at making connection.
